I love when you realize you have been hearing lyrics wrong since the first time you heard the song. I also love when you think your lyrics work better than the real ones. I have always heard you “gotta wanna win” as “you got a war to win”. I guess looking back at who I was in 1984 I can understand why I heard it that way. I can also understand how once you mishear a lyric it’s really hard to unhear it.
I have always loved this song, misheard lyrics and all. I mean it’s got Tina Freaking Turner and in 1984 she was definitely on my list of women I admired. I loved her personal story and all she overcame to become the Tina Turner I knew of in the 80’s. But also as a young girl when this song came out it put a different spin on heartbreak and it spoke to me.

Larry’s Perspective:
First - just a shoutout to this duet. Classic.
I interpret this as it may be hard in the moment, but you need to step back and not take things so seriously. Another way to put it would be to "Hold On Loosely" - because "If you cling too tightly, you're gonna lose control".
Sad to say it took me a minute to learn that lesson in my youth...
