    Shannon’s Perspective:

    Under Construction

    Larry’s Pick: Russians

The fall of the Berlin Wall. November 9th, 1989. 35 years ago today.

To Kansas partying Shannon, this meant nothing in 1989.

To Ohio Germany & History obsessed Larry, this meant everything in 1989.

Our entire lives we lived under the shadow of the Cold War. It lived in politics. It lived in movies. It lived in television. It lived in music.

But most importantly, it lived in East German and West German families and friends who just woke up one day in 1961 and there was a literal wall separating them.

For those who lived and experienced the world's shock and horror of 9/11, the fall of the Berlin Wall was the same type of worldwide seismic emotion, though it was happiness and joy and sadness as expressed in Bravado.

So how could I not love this song? It captures a lot about the Cold War and the idiocy of war in general. Clearly, the Russian have not really got the message of the song 35 years later.

Call me (actually my parents) gullible, but here is my official piece of the Berlin Wall from 1989.

Or Hyman Products, Inc. just went to a local quarry and made a ton of money. Either way, I appreciate the reminder of history.

Tonight Shannon asked me to make sure it wasn't a horse apple from outside Shawshank prison...

So here's to you, "F Politicians!" and "F" War!"

    Russians
    Sting

    In Europe and America
There's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets

Mr. Khrushchev said, "We will bury you"
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy
    From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence

    We share the same biology
    Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

    There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
    It's a lie we don't believe anymore

Mr. Reagan says, "We will protect you"
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

    We share the same biology
    Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me and you
Is if the Russians love their children too
