"I I was standing You were there Two worlds collided And they could never tear us apart"
And no truer words have been spoken. Ok, that might be a bit of an exaggeration but as I sit here thinking back and writing this it is for sure a true statement. Try as some might (read some exes and some family members ) they did not tear us apart.
Larry’s Perspective:
Yes, this was a sappy "love" song from summer 1988 so of course it made all the dances in 1989 which was my / our senior year. Disclaimer: I knew it in Ohio; not sure if INXS was in Kansas yet.
I always loved the video because it was filmed in Prague, which historically has been considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And since I already posted this picture from 18 and Life, I thought, what the hell - I'll throw it out there again just to prove my love for INXS all over again.

Of course, once you meet the criteria of 30 years of marriage (closing quickly onto 31!), if this was part of your youth then it's required to be part of your "adulthood".
But there's a sad side to this song and the band you may not know about. The lead singer, Michael Hutchence, led a tortured life. I believe for the entirety of his fame, he fought personal and public demons. He enjoyed his rock-star lifestyle, but that never led to the type of relationship like Shannon and I have, and I believe he craved that. There was guilt for relationships he ruined, family, friends as well as lovers. This song is more a "I love you and I know I'm going to fuck up, but no matter what I say or do, I don't want anything to tear us apart because we do have happy memories together that we've both enjoyed and I need to hold onto that."
His death was ruled a suicide in 1997, but there is some controversy surrounding the actual cause based on his lifestyle.
I also can't side-step the fact that he had an affair with Paula Yates - who was married to none other than Pink himself, Bob Geldof (This Is the World Calling and Do They Know It's Christmas?). Believe me, as a music person back in the day, the British tabloids kept me and the entire world updated on this one. Along with all the other ladies he spent time with. The INXS song Suicide Blonde is based on his girlfriend at the time, Kyle Minogue. You may know here from such recent hits as Padam Padam.
And don't even get me started on how Shannon pronounces her name versus how I do. It's an inside joke thing...
