Shannon’s Perspective:
“We’re cut adrift, but still floating. I’m only hanging on to watch you go down, my love.”
If I had to come up with the first sarcastic song between Larry and myself, I would have to say I think it is this one. To this day we still quote lines from this song. I’m pretty sure I tell Larry on a weekly basis, “it doesn’t matter to you, it matters to me”.
Being the wise 50 something adult I am today just looking back on the younger version of myself I sometimes wonder how Larry has managed to tolerate the complete and total stubborn side to my personality but then I remember he has the same stubborn streak. I know that for us that stubborn streak is part of what keeps us moving forward together.
Yet another classic from Achtung Baby. This has been in the sarcasm arena since the very beginning for one line and one line only:
"We're cut adrift - But still floating - I'm only hanging on - To watch you go down - my love"
Like so many previous references to our stubbornness, neither one of us would ever back down - always moving forward regardless of the chaos we may create.
And the level of spite that must exist to sing that line to one another.
And you may be thinking - WTF is wrong with those two?
Maybe this kind of approach is why we made it 30 years - we never gave up on ourselves - or each other.
P.S. If you have the chance to watch Season Three, Episode Seventeen of Malcolm In The Middle (Dewey's Dog), there is a scene toward the very end where Hal and Lois are sick as dogs and trying to slow dance at a fancy restaurant. That scene was inspired by what Shannon and I went through last night and tonight. But the show must go on!
