Notes
Larry’s Perspective:
I think it's important to share the lyrics to this song. Important because I think if you at least read them, you will be able to relate. Musically, Pink Floyd may not be your cup of tea, though this song is actually pretty mellow.
Behind the scenes, this song is definitely about the non-existent relationship between David Gilmour and former band-mate Roger Waters. But what's really interesting is the dynamic on who wrote the song with David - his wife (who helped pen a lot of later Pink Floyd songs).
So when you listen to it with both perspectives in mind - David and Roger hating each other and Polly observing this bitter feud, you can probably pick up on which parts an angry wife might be singing.
I'd like to say that I'm not this type of person, but I am - at least initially. When I get pissed, I do get caught in a cauldron of hate; I do get engulfed in a fever of spite. But I try to step back and really think first about my reaction and then the situation.
But I'm not going to lie - I pretty much truly believe most people are idiots. So my anger at their stupidity or lack of sense is justified in my mind. Probably not a very good influence on my sons or others.
Relative to Shannon, this has long been a heart-breaker song. But in this long list of "our soundtrack" we couldn't side-step this one. It's been around since 1994 and will be for the rest of our lives...
Lost for Words
I was spending my time in the doldrums
I was caught in a cauldron of hate
I felt persecuted and paralysed
I thought that everything else would just wait
While you are wasting your time on your enemies
Engulfed in a fever of spite
Beyond your tunnel vision, reality fades
Like shadows into the night
To martyr yourself to caution
Is not gonna help at all
'Cause there'll be no safety in numbers
When the right one walks out of the door
Can you see your days blighted by darkness?
Is it true, you beat your fists on the floor?
Stuck in a world of isolation
While the ivy grows over the door
So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go fuck myself
You know you just can't win
