Shannon’s Pick: Layla
“Like a fool, I fell in love with you. You turned my whole world upside down.”
Where to begin? I guess I’ll start with the fact that there is the original (read correct) version of this song and an “unplugged” version. The fact that there are two versions and each of us not only prefers one version over the other, but we actively mock the other one and their version choice is exactly why this song ended up on the sarcasm list. I don’t know when we started debating the merits of one version over the other, but I know it was very early in our relationship and the debate still continues, even tonight during the dance.
For clarity I have been the Clapton fan much much longer and unplugged is not at all how this song was meant to be sung. Larry is right about one thing….I do call bullshit on his “genius” remark.
P.S. I had the pleasure of working with someone who had a side hustle of driving limo in Columbus, Ohio and also loved music. He would tell me stories of interactions with the musicians he drove and one of his stories involved going to Eric Clapton’s house and meeting not only Clapton but his 3 little girls as well. Not gonna lie, I was more than just a little jealous.
P.P.S. Yes, Eric Clapton has a house in the Columbus, Ohio area because he married an Ohio girl.
Ever since Clapton did the "Unplugged" version of this song, it has been a point of contention in our household.
Shannon has always been a bigger Clapton fan than me - but that's not to say I don't like him. Regardless of his old man politics, he has been an amazing artist and put out some fantastic songs. Solo and otherwise.
And although Shannon has been a bigger Clapton fan, I have always been, and always will be, a bigger music fan. And that makes me the expert. Some might even use the word "genius", though I'm embarrassed when people throw that word my direction. Shannon will say "All of that is complete bullshit" but pay her no attention.
I say all of that because the Unplugged version is the better version - this is the way this song was supposed to be sung.
You just have to read the lyrics and imagine yourself as the one pining over someone else, who clearly would probably treat you as a rebound.
Are you down on one knee rocking out professing your love? No. No you are not.
You're down on one knee with all sincerity professing that you could be more than the rebound, and want to be someone that helps them move on.
It's probably best if you just ignore Shannon's write-up and trust me on this one...
