Shannon’s Perspective:
“Maybe I didn’t love you…..”
Those are the final words of this version of the song making one wonder, is this version a sarcastic version? If you ask Larry, all versions of this song are sarcastic, but I disagree. When you look up the lyrics, even for this version, the song does not end with the above lyric, but you can most definitely hear it when you listen to this version, so was that intentional? Who knows for sure but in this household it is sung with more than a hint of sarcasm.
What a perfect song to follow up "I Love My Wife" - because to me this song drips with such sweet sarcasm.
I believe the general consensus around this song is regret. Looking back on a relationship and doing some self reflection on how you were probably a pretty terrible person.
But that would be the incorrect general consensus.
A couple of acknowledgements - Elvis Presley did a cover, then Willie Nelson and then the Pet Shop Boys. With each obviously adding their own take, and more importantly to me, their own interpretations.
For the PSB version - it all starts and stops with their last line, which is very faint and fades out:
"Maybe I didn't love you"
And while that may be a surprise interpretation of the song, I was basically like "No Shit" - that's exactly how I interpreted it all along. Using another example:
"I'm sorry I hit you - it won't happen again - I promise - I love you" Do you? Do you really?
Shannon and I have always been at odds over the interpretation of this song. Is it a love song about regret or a love song about the realization that you're not in love.
Sure everyone can interpret songs the way they want or feel - but not on this one. Whether it's the PSB version or not.
Maybe I didn't love you...
