“Let’s look for the purple banana before they put us in the truck.”
I love love LOOOOOVVVVE Prince. Always have, always will. To this day I can quote the whole “Dearly Beloved” part by heart (yes, I have a sense of pride about that). How much do I love Prince? Well, I cried when I grew to the whopping height of 5’3” because that meant I was now taller than Prince. And in my “not fully developed yet” teenage brain that was the one and only reason I would never end up with him. If I’m being completely honest, I might have sometimes had that thought even as an adult. Don’t judge me, the man was a legend.
So, for me trying to pick a favorite Prince song is very difficult and changes depending on my mood, but this one always makes the top 10 list no problem. It’s fun to sing, you can dance to it, and not only does it make it ok to be crazy it is actively encouraging you to do so. I can’t help but smile EVERY SINGLE TIME I hear it. Just don’t listen to the lyrics too closely.
Actually, let’s do look at some of those lyrics and the truth bombs they drop.
“Cause in this life things are much harder than the after world.”
“If you don’t like the world you’re living in. Take a look around you. At least you got friends.”
“You better live now before the Grim Reaper come knocking on your door.”
P.S. Yes, I know I am wearing a Rush shirt and not a Prince shirt in the picture, but the Barnes household had boycotted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until Rush was inducted in 2013 and this was our first trip there, so we wanted to represent Rush.
P.PS. I am still looking for that purple banana and trying to stay ahead of those trucks.
P.P.P.S. After hearing Larry’s write up I can neither confirm or deny if I would have ever left him for Prince…..ok who am I kidding I would have in a hearbeat.
Larry’s Perspective:
Well it was bound to happen at some point - and today is a special day in our history - just a short 8 years ago.
03/11/2016 - Cleveland, Ohio - our one and only visit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame museum.
You have no idea what it took for me to actually go. But first I need to provide a little education.
You cannot be inducted into the RNR HOF until it's been 25 years since your first album release. Rush released their first album in 1974. That means they were eligible in 1998/99. And 2000. And 2001. And 2002. And 2003....all the way up until 2013 when they were finally inducted. So needless to say every Rush fan around the world was pissed it took this long. During those years of eligibility but not actually being inducted, Rush fans actually protested in front of the RNR HOF. Was I there? That's a secret I'll never tell.
So eventually two things collided. They were finally inducted - and we were moving out of Ohio - to Kansas. So it would no longer be just a three hour drive from Columbus.
So I grab my date and we hit the road.
And well, well, well. Wouldn't you know it. Shannon's "Rush" was right there in all his glory. Shannon has literally told me, in all seriousness, that she would leave me for Prince. How am I supposed to respond to that? And this giant photo of him on the wall in the RNR HOF?
So, being the loving soon to be ex-husband, I wanted to capture the moment and told her she should give him a hug. Which of, course, she did. Because she does not give a fuck. And loves Prince. More than me.
Just some great memories.
P.S. Fun fact, Randy Newman of the dirty song from earlier as well as Toy Story, etc. was in the 2013 class as well.
P.P.S. It ABSOLUTELY should not be called the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame museum. Have you seen some of the artists that are in there?
