Our Pick / Perspective: Tarzan Boy
Even though this song came out in 1985 when I was a teenager, it will always take me back to the late 90's early 2000's when we lived in Lancaster, Ohio. Back then I would take the boys toy shopping at Family Toy Warehouse because Lancaster wasn't cool enough to have a Toy's R Us. This song was one they had playing on the store Muzac system. Since Disney's Tarzan came out in 1999 I think the kids thought this song had something to do with the movie, but regardless they loved this song and so did I. So we had fun strolling around the toy store listening to the music and singing together.
Of course right after I think about the kids and Family Toy Warehouse I think about the year Furby's were the hot hot Christmas toy. I went to that store everyday until I was finally able to secure 2 for the boys. Larry tried to talk me into selling them on eBay and buying the kids theirs after the holiday but I made sure they had theirs on Christmas morning. Then I think about an instance of parental embarrassment in Family Toy, in which Gabriel very loudly and nonchalantly proclaimed "mommy when you beat my ass it makes my head hurt". I of course was shocked because I could count on one hand how many times I even spanked my kids let alone "beat their ass" but Gabriel was going through this cursing phase. Keep in mind he was 4/5 when he went through this phase.
Yes, it was a phase and not a one-time thing. I blamed Larry at the time because he did not quit cursing in front of them until they were talking in full sentences. It was also hard to get mad at Gabriel because he was using the words correctly and at moments where it was hard not to laugh. A couple of my favorite memories are as follows:
Myself, my BFF Kim, Gabriel and Connor were all driving down Morse Road in Columbus when we had to stop at a red light. Gabriel looked over to see a man at the bus stop talking very loudly to himself. Without warning Gabriel said "what's that guys fucking problem?' I'm pretty sure Kim and I tried but we couldn't help but laugh.
Hearing Gabriel yelling at his brother to quit banging on the bathroom door because he was trying to go and needed "some fucking privacy'.
To those who are judging me go right ahead I stand by my laughter in these moments.
Now it's my turn to add a little commentary.
- Fun fact: both of our sons did end up working at Toys-R-Us off Hamilton Road, though my understanding is the word "work" is used loosely.
- That's the same Toys-R-Us I would literally camp out at all night at in order to secure some PS2's and Wii's. No lie, one year I resold so many PS2's I not only paid for the one we gave our sons for Christmas, I literally made enough to pay for all the Christmas gifts to the boys.
- Don't let Shannon's accusation fool you - that I was the cause of our sons cursing. As we were talking about this song, she mentioned a time where she heard Connor and all his friends gaming online dropping F-bombs like their lives depended on it. She burst onto the scene and proceeded to tell him that she thought him and his friends "needed to watch their fucking language"; which then Connor burst out laughing and his friends were commenting "man, your mom is so funny and cool!"
Bottom line - as a parent you are guaranteed to be horrified at some point in a moment with your children, but those memories are the ones that stick around and make you smile...glad this song resurfaced these memories for us...
