Shannon’s Perspective:
"I told the priest
Don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked
The first time he came down here slumming
He had the balls to come
The gall to die and then forgive us
No, I don't wonder why
I wonder what he thought it would get us"
I had a very similar thought in my younger years, but I never could have said it as well. So the first time I heard these lyrics they spoke to me in a way that made sense of my anger at god and religion and kept me on the path of questioning. While I do not prescribe to the traditional god people talk of or think the bible is anything more than a tool to keep control over people, I do openly admit I have no idea what happens to us after we die, but NO ONE DOES. We may think we do based on religious beliefs or lack thereof but the truth is until you die you do not know.
Well Shannon stole my lyrics.
Did you know there are approximately 4,000+ religions in the world? The top 5 being Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
I personally think it's better to say you are "spiritual" as opposed to "religious".
But what do I know? All I know is what I believe, and as long as we are just having a conversation about what you believe as opposed to you preaching it to me, we're fine.
But I'll also be honest and say I'll likely consider myself more intelligent and less gullible than you. After reading Shannon's entry, I immediately thought of the character Gary Oldman plays in The Book of Eli. This is what she means as "control" of people and what I mean by being "gullible".
Reminder: read Come Sail Away and watch the movie Knowing if you want my perspective.
So here's to you, "F" religion!
