What can I say about The Camera Eye? I know Larry enjoys this song so I will try not to be too harsh.
While I do truly love most of Rush's music this song sadly, for Larry, is not one of them. I’m not really sure what it is about it I don’t like I just don’t. I’ve thought about the music and while it feels dated there are several of Rush’s songs that can sound dated (I mean they have been around since the 70’s) but I still enjoy them. I’ve thought about the lyrics and while I don’t think they are bad they just don’t really speak to me on any particular level. I’ve thought about the almost 11 minutes of playtime but 2112 comes in at over 20 minutes and I love that song. So, I don’t really know but what I do know is a 10-minute-long song that you don’t necessarily care if you see live is the perfect opportunity for a bathroom break. Honestly, I always loved going to the bathroom at a Rush concert the ratio of men to women at a Rush concert is like 100 to 1 so how fun to walk past a long line at the men’s while being able to walk right into the women’s. Gotta say, it’s probably the only time in my life where there is no wait for the women’s bathroom.
P.S. Larry mentioned at lunch I should listen to the song during my write-up, I tried and I found I don’t dislike it as much as I used to, that’s something, right?
Oh Time Machine tour you gave me some of my best Rush tour memories. The movie cameos were hilarious, the set list was fantastic and fast forward to April you were blessed to have my son in attendance for his first Rush concert.
To clarify the timeline, Shannon and I attended this tour stop first on 8/29/2010 and then Shannon, Connor and I attended the Cleveland stop on 4/15/2011 as discussed in the Marathon post.
Much like La Villa Strangiato this song does a fantastic job really showcasing the talents of all three members. But where that song was written based on Alex's dreams/nightmares, this song was written based on Neil's experiences spending time in New York City and London.
This particular tour stop, and specifically this song, was important for an interesting personal reason.
Shannon. Hates. This. Song. And I mean actively hates it. With a passion.
Aside from the fact that there isn't one Rush song I hate, even to the average listener, there really isn't anything to hate about this song.
When they started playing it, I was so excited because this was the first time Shannon would be seeing it live and I knew she couldn't get away from it. She HAD to listen to it.
Or so I thought.
As soon as they started playing it, all I heard was "Whelp, I gotta go to the bathroom" and off she went. So for the next ten minutes and fifty-nine seconds, I was all alone. And I know damn well she wasn't in the bathroom that whole time because no females attend Rush concerts and I knew she could get in and out in no time flat. Who knows how she spent that time, but it sure wasn't with me.
Besides attending the actual concert, this has always been a fun, inside joke memory for us...
P.S. I believe she pulled this same disappearing act for the Live In Cleveland show. But at least I had Connor as company...
Rest In Peace, Neil Peart - 09/12/1952 - 01/07/2020
