Shannon’s Perspective:
"The ones who've done you wrong
Oh, the ones who pretended to be so strong
The grudges you've held for so long
It's not worth singing that same sad song"
This lyric rings true for me because I have struggled to "wish them well" but because of my medical issues and ketamine treatments I am learning "it's not worth singing that same sad song..."
There was no way I was missing this entry. I am insisting that you read the lyrics first AND THEN my thoughts.
Wish Them Well
Music by Lee and Lifeson / Lyrics by Peart
All that you can do is wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
Spirits turned bitter by the poison of envy
Always angry and dissatisfied
Even the lost ones, the frightened and mean ones
Even the ones with the devil inside
Thank your stars you're not that way
Turn your back and walk away
Don't even pause and ask them why
Turn around and say goodbye
Wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
People who judge without a measure of mercy
All the victims who will never learn
Even the lost ones, you can only give up on
Even the ones who make you burn
Thank your stars you're not that way
Turn your back and walk away
Don't even pause and ask them why
Turn around and say goodbye
Don't even pause and ask them why
Turn around and say goodbye
The ones who've done you wrong
Oh, the ones who pretended to be so strong
The grudges you've held for so long
It's not worth singing that same sad song
Ones who've done you wrong
Oh, the ones who pretended to be so strong
Grudges you've held for so long
It's not worth singing that same sad song
Thank your stars you're not that way
Turn your back and walk away
Don't even pause and ask them why
Turn around and say goodbye
Thank your stars you're not that way
Turn your back and walk away
Don't even pause and ask them why
Turn around and say goodbye
All that you can do is wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
All that you can do is wish them well
Even though you're going through hell
Just keep on going, let the demons dwell
Just wish them well (wish them well)
Just wish them well
Wish them well
Even though you're going through hell
Wish them well
First of all - I can only aspire to be this person. The kind of person who can just turn around and walk away from all those people that push your buttons.
But sadly I'm not. I do have a high tolerance for your jackassery, but once it crosses my red line, I'm not always able to "Turn your back and walk away;
Don't even pause and ask them why; Turn around and say goodbye"
But the fact that this song and motivation exists in my life reminds me I can always do better.
Second - I love the play on the misattributed Winston Churchill quote "If you're going through hell, keep going".
Sometimes that is all you can do - keep going..
Third (borrowed from the internet because it conveys my interpretation so eloquently):
"Wish Them Well" conveys a message of rising above negativity and letting go of grudges. It encourages you to wish well upon those who have caused harm or held ill will, promoting forgiveness and personal growth.
Some lyrics describe people whose spirits have become bitter due to envy.
They are depicted as always angry, dissatisfied, and even possessed by the Devil. This may be a commentary on the destructive nature of jealousy and how it can consume individuals.
Some lyrics focus on the consequences of judgment without mercy. That those who judge others harshly are ultimately victims who fail to learn and grow from their own mistakes. It also conveys that even those who have caused harm can become unreachable, making it necessary to let go and move on from such individuals.
It's not worth singing the "same sad song," implying that it only perpetuates negativity and brings no real resolution or healing. Metaphorically, the song uses the imagery of walking away and turning your back to represent breaking free from toxic relationships or situations. It emphasizes the importance of self-preservation and not allowing oneself to be dragged down by negativity.
In the chorus, the line "Even though you're going through hell, Just keep on going, let the demons dwell" suggests that despite facing difficult circumstances, it is crucial to persevere and focus on one's own well-being rather than getting caught up in the negativity perpetuated by others.
Overall, "Wish Them Well" encourages listeners to rise above negativity and find inner strength, promoting forgiveness and personal growth. It conveys the idea that holding onto grudges and dwelling on the actions of others only weighs one down. Instead, it advocates for wishing well upon those who have caused harm and choosing to let go, paving the way for a healthier and more positive outlook on life.
P.S. And that's what I did for myself today. It was time to leave my first employer here in Saint Francis and move on to something different. I'm thankful for the new people I met and the knowledge I gained the first few years here (almost 5!) and I'm excited to indoctrinate myself into my third completely different "career path" - First logistics then automotive and now healthcare.
All that I can do is wish them, and myself, well...
