  • What’s My Age Again? (blink-182)

    Shannon’s Perspective:

"No one should take themselves so seriously"

I am part of the "I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys R' Us kid" generation and we mean that shit, at least the cool ones do. Or maybe it's just the ones I hang out with. For a lot of us we were old when we were younger and now that we are actually getting old we are trying to recapture the youth we missed out on. I have been telling people long before this song came out that my motto in life was "I may have to grow old but I refuse to grow up." It still is my motto.

Larry’s Pick: What’s My Age Again?

Exactly. The title says it all.

This song released in April, 1999 when I was just a mere 28 years old. I had irresponsibly knocked up my girlfriend once - and then my wife once - and was a "father figure" to a 4 and 3 year old.

I hadn't grown up then. I just turned 54 and I haven't grown up now.

I've been a blink-182 fan since the beginning and I'm sure Shannon didn't approve at first. After all, it's just a bunch of immature West coast punks - what could I have possibly seen in them?

Talent. And funny immature West coast punks.

I love being able to do stupid shit as much as I want, as long as there's a pause and I ask myself this question.

To quote Steven Mackey, a Princeton professor of music:

"It's very much this portrait of this kind of 23 year old... Peter Pan complex; after the second chorus there's this instrumental break. And there's a lot of instrumental breaks in blink, which I really like. This one in particular, it goes to a minor key. All of a sudden, it's kind of melancholy. And when they come out of that instrumental break, and I hear the rest of the words, it's sort of like... I feel like, wow, was that a moment of reflection? And then it's like, 'Ah, fuck it. Whatever.' It has that feeling. It sort of deepens it for me."

Stay young at heart & immature people! And always ask others: DILLIGAF?

So here's to you, "F" growing up!
