Shannon’s Perspective:
“Hey baby, it’s a quarter to eight….”
This is Rush before Neil so honestly it didn’t get a lot of airtime in the Barnes household over the years, but it still brings a smile to my face and is fun to sing and it’s even more fun when Larry sings it to me.
Larry’s Perspective:
Let's start with some Rush context - this is off their first album released in 1974. It is also the only album with original drummer John Rutsey. This song was written by Geddy Lee, who was only 20 years old at the time.
So if the drumming and lyrics sound basic - and horny, that might help put things in perspective.
I mean - what guy doesn't have hormones raging at 20 years old? And what guy at 50+ years doesn't wish he was that guy again? This seems like a perfect song for me to write a parody for someday - getting old, knees hurting, "Well, everything's getting hazy" could be the sign of a stroke coming on, confirming that "Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight" really means we're up WAY past our bedtime as opposed to trying to score.
Really this is just a tongue-in-cheek song for me - I'm pretty sure I can make Shannon laugh every time I sing this to her...just a feel good song in the Barnes household.
In the Mood
Music by Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and John Rutsey / Lyrics by Geddy Lee
Oh hey, now, baby
Well, I like your smile
Won't you come and talk to me
For a little while?
Well, you're makin' me crazy
The way you roll them eyes
Won't you come and sit with me?
I'll tell you all my lies
Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight
I feel I'm in the mood
Hey baby, the hour is late
I feel I've got to move
Well, hey, now, baby
Don't you talk so fast
I'm just tryin' to make this good time
I'm tryin' to make it last
Well, everything's getting hazy
Now honey, where'd you go?
I just want to find out, baby
Where'd you learn what you know?
Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight
I feel I'm in the mood
Hey baby, the hour is late
I feel I've got to move
Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight
I feel I'm in the mood
Hey baby, the hour is late
I feel I've got to move
Well, hey, now, baby
I said I like your style
You really got me, baby
Way down deep inside
Ooh, you drive me crazy
Baby, you're the one
I just want to rock and roll you woman
Until the night is gone
Hey, baby, it's a quarter to eight
I feel I'm in the mood
Hey baby, the hour is late
I feel I've got to move
Yes, I do
