  • At Last (Etta James)

    Shannon’s Perspective:

“And life is like a song”

A song that needs no explanation……..

    At last
    My love has come along
    My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

    Oh yeah yeah
    At last

    The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

    Oh yeah yeah
    You smiled, you smiled
Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
    For you are mine...

    At Last

P.S.. Larry and I have a friend that has been a big part of the lives of all 4 of us in the Barnes household, his name is Jon. He and I had a conversation once where he “politely” reminded me that not everyone is lucky enough to find their person in their very early 20’s like Larry and I, so it’s never lost on me that we were so lucky we didn’t have to wait for long for our “At Last”.

P.P.S. Release date November 15,1960……exactly a decade before Larry was born.

    Larry’s Perspective:

Just a classic love song. And although it conjures up a certain story, that's not my story. And I suspect not a story of pretty much any dude of my generation.

Shannon and I just watched a series of shows about the top ten things in various categories from the 80's, hosted by Rob Lowe (when he wasn't seeing his therapist, Dr. Richard Nygard).

It brought back some great memories, and some horrible, horrible memories (I'm looking in your direction Wendy's SuperBar).

The shows really reminded me of what all happened, especially deregulation that affected advertising and marketing to kids. Needless to say I grew up in the era of G.I. Joe, He-Man, Star Wars, Transformers, Voltron, etc.

Girls were influenced by Barbie, Cabbage Patch Kids, My Little Pony, etc.

So laying around and dreaming of "At Last" was absolutely not on my radar. Honestly the radar wasn't even turned on from the early 80's to 1992.

And then all of the sudden, my radar lit up.

So as we danced tonight, the lyric from this song that hits the most is "and here we are in heaven"

    At Last, indeed...

P.S. I worked at Wendy's in high school, and I failed purposely working the SuperBar so that I could keep my "cool" job as the drive-thru cashier.
