Well we've made it past the births of our two sons. I think for both of us, and maybe our sons as well, this chapter of our music journey was certainly bittersweet. The notes these songs played in the soundtrack of our lives definitely needed to be included. Along with this song.
This song hits on the same level as Cat's In the Cradle and in the same way.
Prior to fatherhood, it was a great song. After having both of our sons and deciding that was it (we were keeping the two teams equal: Mom & Dad vs. Son 1 & Son 2), the song took on a whole new meaning.
I also cannot think of this song without thinking about the part it played in the movie Mr. Holland's Opus (which is one of my all-time favorites). I mean it centers around music, does a great job moving through time and puts mortality front and center in multiple ways. Shout out to any educator out there that has put in the time like Mr. Holland.
It's at this moment in time that Shannon and I can truly reflect on these lyrics;
1994 / 1995 POV: "I can hardly wait - To see you come of age - But I guess we'll both just have to be patient"
2024 POV: "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans"
These 29 / 30 years have flown by in an instant...
P.S. Allen Saunders 1957 Reader's Digest quote "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans" is the source of inspiration for the slightly altered line in this song...
