Shannon’s Pick: More Than A Dream

    "And I believe
    we can change
we can make it more than a dream
    "

Another infusion day and another song meant to playfully be punny about it. After all everything I see and experience during these infusions is very dreamlike. But on a more serious note these infusions are allowing me to change and make things more than a dream.

    Larry’s Perspective:

It is Ketamine infusion day, but I'm glad Shannon chose this song. It was on my initial list for this project, but I'm not sure it would have made the final cut. So thank Shannon for this useless information.

To me, this song has always been a prep song for becoming "Empty Nesters". Having our sons so young meant we had little time for ourselves. As reality set in that hey, we aren't going to be so old when they actually move out, we started to think about what was next. I know moving to Kansas was nowhere on the original list of possibilities.

I can't tell you how many trips we took back and forth from Ohio to Kansas back to Ohio over the course of several years after we had bought this house. What I can tell you is this - it's 1,114 miles ONE WAY from Pickerington to Saint; that's anywhere from 16 to 18 hours drive time. Unfortunately for Shannon, I am a get in and go kind of guy - so the majority of those trips were done in one day. Straight through. And I did 90% of the driving.

So that means whether it was early, early morning or late, late overnight, we were on the road in the dark. Truth be told 99% of those dark hours while Shannon was trying to sleep I would listen to Enya. That may seem counterintuitive to some, but it relaxed me and helped me focus on driving.

These lyrics from this song instantly transport me to these drives.

    Driving through the night
    just you and me
    Faster than the pale moonlight
    Something's calling
    Calling us away

We were driving through the night.
It was just her and I.
I won't divulge if I was driving faster than the pale moonlight.
The next chapter in our life was calling us away. Away from the life we had built together in Ohio.

I guess I would classify these as road trips with my best friend. We enjoyed many great conversations, made some Larry required "World's Largest fill in the blank" Americana stops, listened to some great music as well as had typical marriage road trip "disagreements" such as my P.S. story...

P.S. To set the scene, we were towing a U-Haul trailer of stuff from Ohio to Saint. I don't have a lot of complaints about my Tacoma, but their software around Average Fuel Consumption and Range Remaining is probably my number one. It's always been frustrating and terrible, and it all came to a head one fateful (Night? Morning?) around 2:30am East of Oakley, Kansas.

I'm a data nerd. I know the typical tank range in all my vehicles. Add a RTT, range goes down. Attach a lightly loaded U-Haul, range goes down. Attach a heavily loaded U-Haul, range goes down. Tacoma Range Software? Doesn't change. So we're cruising right along in the middle of the night and all of a sudden my low fuel warning light comes on. In the middle of nowhere Kansas. Shannon's sixth sense kicks in and she wakes up and says something to the equivalent of "What the fuck?" while giving me the evil eye.

Since I have all my fuel stops pre-planned I know our next one is Oakley, but we're not exactly close. So I reduce speed to about 45mph and try to avoid eye contact with Shannon who's fuming at this point.

I try to break the ice by encouraging our "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" duet but she's having none of it. She starts ranting about me listening to Jeremy Clarkson too much and playing his stupid game of Fuel Light Bingo.

Obviously we made it, but the rest of that drive was a little colder than others I recall...

    Pet Shop Boys

    Coming soon
    something good
    Something we can share
    Understood
    Could be better news
    we can share
    Something's coming soon
    I hear it everywhere

    (Live it)
It's the story of our lives
    (Don't give it)
It's the way we've always been
    (Live it)
    Though the mountains may divide
    (Don't give it)
    we can reach the sea

    And I believe
    we can change
we can make it more than a dream
    And I believe
    we can change
It's not as strange as it might seem

In the air I can feel
    something magical becoming real
    From the other side
    looking in
    Come on throw the dice
    and tonight we'll win

    (Live it)
It's the story of our lives
    (Don't give it)
It's the way we've always been
    (Live it)
    Though the mountains may divide
    (Don't give it)
    we can reach the sea

    And I believe
    we can change
we can make it more than a dream
    And I believe
    we can change
It's not as strange as it might seem

    Driving through the night
    just you and me
    Faster than the pale moonlight
    Something's calling
    Calling us away
    Do you believe
    Heaven is a better place?
We'll be there in a heartbeat

    I believe
    we can change
we can make it more than a dream
    And I believe
    we can change
It's not as strange as it might seem
