Borrowed Time (John Lennon)

Well folks, we're nearing the end. Not long now until the final entry on February 19th, 2025. The last major theme to close us out revolves around the Passing of Time. If the first few months of this project were tough, they're actually a cakewalk compared to what we're about to go through. We're getting old and life perspectives are changing as they should - AKA we're closer to dying than when we were born. Some of these songs represent the heaviest weights that we've carried since knowing them. Some are as recent as 2023 and 2024, but I know in my heart of hearts that even if they came out in 1989 they would have made this list - they are that profound to me.

So if you're an artist that made this project from here on out you should feel humble and proud...you achieved what you set out to do...make music that people feel and love...thank you.

Shannon’s Pick: Borrowed Time

Now I am older
The more that I see the less that I know for sure

Isn’t that the truth? With each passing year and each life event I realize just how little I really do know. At 53 years old I am still discovering things about myself let alone all the other things I know nothing about. I do greatly appreciate the fact that I worry much less about the little things at this point in life. This year (2025) is all about decluttering for me. My life, my mind, my home and yes, even the people in it. As I realize more and more how fast this borrowed time is going, I choose to dedicate whatever time I have left to things that bring me joy and most importantly bring me peace. Life really is too short for anything else.

P.S. I think it is important to know that this song was not released until three years after John’s death. Which for me makes this song even more meaningful and proves that we all are living on borrowed time.

Larry’s Perspective:

It's funny to me how different artists can convey the same concept in such varied manners. Spoiler Alert: Most of these last songs will cover the same concept.

I like how this song moves through the various stages of life and think about what stage my sons and daughter-in-law are in - and know that Shannon and I were in that same place, albeit many, many years ago.

So they are at the beginning of the song and we are at the end. But no matter the stage, you are living on borrowed time...
Borrowed Time
John Lennon

When I was younger

Living confusion and deep despair

When I was younger ah, hah

Living illusion of freedom and power

When I was younger

Full of ideas and broken dreams, my friend

When I was younger ah, hah

Everything simple but not so clear

Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow

Now I am older

The more that I see, the less that I know for sure

Now I am older ah, hah

The future is brighter and now is the hour

Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow

Good to be older

Would not exchange a single day or a year

Good to be older ah, hah

Less complications, everything clear

Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow
Living on borrowed time
Without a thought for tomorrow

Oh, yes it all seemed so bloody easy then
You know, like "What to wear?" very serious, like, you know
"Am I gonna get rid of the pimples?"
"Does she really love me?"
All that crap
But now I don't bother about that shit no more.
I know she loves me
All I've gotta bother about is standing up.

Alright, you can get out of that
