Broken (Seether feat. Amy Lee)

Shannon’s Pick: Broken

“I wanted you to know that I love the way you laugh”

I love this song and I love Seether, especially their 2007 album Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces even though this particular song is not on that album. It is important to know that from the first time I heard this song until today as soon as I hear the first line all I can think about is Larry. When Larry finds something especially funny his laugh is infectious. One of the things he finds the most consistently entertaining is a BBC show called Top Gear which then morphed into The Grand Tour. Let us be clear this is NOT the American version this is the one and only with another favorite trio….Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

It was not unusual to find Larry in the living room of our house on Longleaf Street with his Bose Noise Canceling over ear headphones on watching this show and laughing till he cried at something only he could hear. Our house in Pickerington, Ohio had an open floor concept and the living room was two stories high at the peak and 12 feet high at the lowest point. This is important because it meant the sound of his laughter from this room carried throughout the house and would bring the boys and I running to see what in the world was so funny.

As a wife of a hardworking, family first before himself husband I treasured these moments. I knew he was able to shed some of the stress from life and the sound of his laughter throughout the house was contagious for the kids and me. It also made me curious about this show he was watching and it slowly drew me in so that by the time the last episode aired and we watched together their was both laughter and tears.

Larry’s Perspective:

I know why Shannon chose this song and it's 100% true. I have watched the Top Gear lineup since it's inception and subsequently The Grand Tour. Whoever paired Jeremy, Richard and James together deserves my deepest gratitude. I can honestly say I have never laughed so heartily in my life as I have watching these three.

I mean look at this picture:
This is my Blue By You (that's the actual color name) 2003 EVO VIII with my personalized "The Stig" Ohio license plate. When I saw the trailer for The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick and James was A) Obviously in a terrible accident and B) The Lightning Yellow EVO was sinking, my heart sank - for the car. And keeping with true Top Gear sentiments, I suppose for James as well. But he brought it on himself, so...

When they aired the last The Grand Tour: One For The Road episode, tears were shed - seriously. I had watched these three entertain me and the automotive world for the entirety of their 22 years together. As mentioned in The Wreckers, at the end of the episode they just had to play Brothers In Arms which was a bolt from the blue and caught both Shannon and I off guard. That was tough. But honestly, it was a perfect song to end an era of these three together.

As I listened to this song to help prepare this write up, this part struck me based on all the writing I just did for Distant Early Warning:

And I don't feel like I am strong enough

I don't think Shannon really keyed into this song for anything other than my Top Gear laugh, but I'm curious to see if she has anything to say about that line.

Thank You Jeremy, Richard and James...you made life a little more enjoyable, sometimes when I needed it most...

Hat tip to The Stig, all the Stars In A Reasonably Priced Car, the Top Gear test track, Gambon Corner AND Gabe-On Corner and The Grand Tour.

P.S. You might not know Amy Lee is the co-founder and lead singer of a band called Evanescence. They won't make an appearance for this project, but I do love them. Her voice is one of those simply unbelievable other-wordly kind and I'm glad she pursued her passion.
Broken
Seether (feat. Amy Lee)

I wanted you to know that I love the way you laugh
I want to hold you high and steal your pain away
I keep your photograph, and I know it serves me well
I want to hold you high and steal your pain

Because I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you've gone away
You've gone away
You don't feel me here anymore

The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I want to hold you high, you steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I want to hold you high and steal your pain

'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

You've gone away

You don't feel me here anymore
