Being Boring (Pet Shop Boys)

Shannon’s Perspective:

“And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end”

I too have also enjoyed this song for the feelings of sadness and longing it invokes and I believe the above lyrics capture that feeling for me the best.

Larry’s Pick: Being Boring

This song has always held a special place for me, and I suppose it's because it's so melancholy. It has that quiet, deep reflection about life that I enjoy doing.

I also like to believe that I had spent my life not being bored. I'm on my third career path as it were; I've taken some pretty extensive solo motorcycle trips; I'm a dad and I've been married over thirty years! I would say all of that qualifies as not being bored!

In my younger career days, I was lucky enough to find inspiration in someone who opened up doors and that made a ton of difference for me. Later on, I would still come across those that were personally inspirational. All which leads me to say that I hope in some small way, I did the same for someone else.

Who doesn't have trepidation when they leave the nest? It is a part of life to head off into the unknown and pursue your dreams - critics be damned!

Finally, you get to the place where you reflect on all the people you've come across in your life - Some are here and some are missing - and whether it's because you've drifted apart or had a falling out or it's because they passed away, all of those are certainly melancholy to me. But I enjoy thinking about every one of them, even if it is sometimes striking down like a bolt from the blue...

P.S. I've also always loved the subtle reference to Zelda Fitzgerald...

Being Boring
Pet Shop Boys

I came across a cache of old photos
And invitations to teenage parties
"Dress in white," one said with quotations
From someone's wife, a famous writer
In the 1920s

When you're young, you find inspiration
In anyone who's ever gone
And opened up a closing door
She said, "We were never feeling bored

'Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought, "Make amends"
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end"

When I went, I left from the station
With a haversack and some trepidation
Someone said, "If you're not careful
You'll have nothing left and nothing to care for
In the 1970s"

But I sat back and looking forward
My shoes were high and I had scored
I'd bolted through a closing door
I would never find myself feeling bored

'Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought, "Make amends"
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end
We were always hoping that, looking back
You could always rely on a friend

Now I sit with different faces
In rented rooms and foreign places
All the people I was kissing
Some are here and some are missing
In the 1990s

I never dreamt that I would get to be
The creature that I always meant to be
But I thought in spite of dreams
You'd be sitting somewhere here with me

'Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought, "Make amends"
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end
We were always hoping that, looking back
You could always rely on a friend

And we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought, "Make amends"
And we were never being boring
We were never being bored
'Cause we were never being boring
We were never being bored
