Everything (Alanis Morissette)

Shannon’s Pick: Everything

“And you're still here”

What an amazing song. This song was the final song on the “mixed tape” I made for Larry as an early 40th birthday gift. We have mentioned it before but I don’t think we have ever clarified exactly what that was because it was more than just a mixed tape. It was a 4 CD compilation of songs with 9 pages of liner notes that I felt represented the 18 years we had spent together at that point in time. I bring this up because I think it conveys the importance, I put on this particular song all those years ago and I still feel the same 13 years later.

This was my original write up in the liner notes:

This to me is the perfect song to end this little project with. When I listen to this it says “Everything” I have ever wanted to say to you over the last 18 years. But most importantly –

“You see everything, you see every part. You see all my light and you love my dark. You dig everything of which I’m ashamed. There’s not anything to which you can’t relate and you’re still here.”

And for everyone else, there is no way I could ever say it any better than Alanis did so I’m not even gonna try but I’ll just leave the lyrics here…

I can be an asshole of the grandest kind
I can withhold like it's going out of style
I can be the moodiest, baby, and you've never met anyone
Who's as negative as I am sometimes

I am the wisest woman you've ever met
I am the kindest soul with whom you've connected
I have the bravest heart that you've ever seen, and you've never met anyone
Who's as positive as I am sometimes

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything, of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can't relate
And you're still here

I blame everyone else, not my own partaking
My passive aggressiveness can be devastating
I'm terrified and mistrusting, and you've never met anyone
Who's as closed down as I am sometimes

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything, of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can't relate
And you're still here

What I resist, persists, and speaks louder than I know
What I resist you love, no matter how low or high I go

I am the funniest woman that you've ever known
I am the dullest woman that you've ever known
I'm the most gorgeous woman that you've ever known, and you've never met anyone
Who's as everything as I am sometimes

You see everything (you see everything), you see every part (you see every part)
You see all my light (you see all my light), and you love my dark (and you love my dark)
You dig everything (you dig everything), of which I'm ashamed (of which I'm ashamed)
There's not anything (there's not anything), to which you can't relate (to which you can't relate)
And you're still here, and you're still here
(You see all my light, and you love my dark), ooh, and you're still here
(You dig everything, of which I'm ashamed)
(There's not anything to which you can't relate)
And you're still here

Larry’s Perspective:

Honestly, it means a lot that Shannon gave this song to me. I know that she has absorbed the lyrics very deeply and it means a lot to her personally.

Along this entire journey, we've referenced anxiety's and fears of being yourself to only be rejected. But neither one of us has done that with each other. What you see is what you get and I wouldn't have it any other way...
