Don’t Change (INXS)

Shannon’s Perspective:

"Don't change a thing for me"

What a beautiful sentiment made even more beautiful by the thought that had we met in high school we would have been together. I have to be brutally honest and say that while the thought is beautiful the fact remains that we did not run in the same circles in high school and I'm not sure we would have connected in the same way. I still had some learning to do before I was ready for Larry to enter my life. Once he did though, there was no looking back.

I was actually doing some deep thinking about this the other day. Specifically about the timing of our meeting and the things that we connected over. I had one of those lightbulb moments where something just clicked and I realized with Larry, for the first time I got to act my actual age. I wasn't trying to be so grown up. I got to be a young woman with minimal responsibilities. We had fun. We hung out with people our age and did all the things early twenty somethings did in the early nineties. It was freeing to be able to truly be myself and not what was expected of me by others.

I'm not going to lie though, the young kid still inside of me finds the thought of Larry wanting to take me away from it all through music so romantic.

Larry’s Pick: Don’t Change

This one is easy for me because I had already given this song to Shannon on a previous playlist, so I'm just copying in what I wrote oh so many years ago.

The sentiment "didn't change"...

Where we’ve been...our high school life (if I had known you…)

This was really emotional for me – and it will be for you, and I hope it doesn’t upset you. Please think of this as a “Clarence and Alabama” situation. Specifically, how Clarence did anything he had to, to save Alabama. Even if I was only 16, 17 or 18 I would have felt this way. These are songs that I know had I known you in high school and knew all or even just some of the things you were experiencing / going through / putting yourself through, I would have given to you.

I honestly do not remember giving these songs to anyone else, so “Please Forgive Me” if I have mentioned it in the past and don’t recall today. They only have one meaning in my life now, and they are dedicated to you.

And I hope if any of these songs mean something to you for someone else, that you please tell me…

Don’t Change (INXS, 1983)
Rediscovering the $2 INXS CDs at Half-Price Books took me back to when I first discovered their catalogue after “Kick” came out. As soon as I re-heard this song, I knew it was for you. I think about this time in our lives and how high school forces you to “change” to fit in. You do a lot of changing that wasn’t necessarily for you, but for others. I also think about the self-destructive changes you put yourself through and it breaks my heart. I wish I had been there to give you this song…but I’m glad I was there in 1992 to tell you “Don't change for you; Don't change a thing for me…”
