Yellow (Coldplay)

Shannon’s Pick: Yellow

“And you know, you know I love you so.”

This song was on the original mixed tape (playlist) I gave Larry in April 2010, that project was supposed to be for his 40th birthday but when his dad passed away earlier that year it reminded me that we are not guaranteed anything in this life, so I thought I better get that project done sooner rather than later. So he got it about 8 months early, since he did not get this song for his 40th birthday I decided to regift it this year for his 54th.

The very first birthday Larry and I spent together was his 22nd birthday, right before we started dating. Myself and a couple other girls in our department got him a cake and card from the whole department so it wasn't exactly a romantic gesture but we still celebrated the day together. We have been celebrating his birthday together ever since.

There are some songs that when you listen to them bring you nothing but joy and happiness, this song is one of those songs for me. I mean the title is Yellow, the color of sunshine and happiness, even Pixar made Joy bright yellow on Inside Out (I finally got around to watching the second one recently so it was on my mind). Tonight I'll take you on a little journey of what goes through my head when I listen to this song. Things to me that seem obvious, but maybe they aren't obvious to everyone. One of the things working on this project keeps reminding me of is how very differently two people can interpret the exact same song

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah, they were all yellow

Since Larry is always looking to the stars for the aliens to come take him away this seems appropriate that I would be telling him that the stars shine for him.

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called "Yellow"

I may not have written this song for him but I did come along on this journey of life with him.

So then I took my turn
Oh, what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones
(Ooh) turn into something beautiful

(Oh) and you know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so

This part here just screams to me how one day someone can be a stranger and the next something so much more and how beautiful that something more is.

I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh, what a thing to do
'Cause you were all yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh, what a thing to do
And it was all yellow

This is about taking a chance on him and us and how I will forever be grateful for taking that chance.

Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do

I think it is so perfect the song ends with look how they shine for you and all the things that you do, because they do and they should.

Larry’s Perspective:

I have a feeling tonight's entry will be a little more emotional than my Come Undone entry on Shannon's birthday...
