Break (Three Days Grace)

Shannon’s Pick: Break

"Break away from everybody
Break away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take yourself to higher places
"

Three Days Grace and I spent A LOT of time together in my days on the dock at DC7 as a clerical.

Listening to music on my headphones at work has always been my way to take myself to higher places when I just can't stand the way the place is and over the years I spent so much time with headphones in tuning out the world around me. Sometimes I was just trying to tune out the sound of the conveyor lines directly above my head or the forklifts blaring their horns. Other times it was due to personal things going on that I was trying to work through. But on the days when Three Days Grace was being played it was most likely because my boss or some other idiot had pissed me off again and it was better for everyone for me to be in my own little world.

P.S. I realize that part of the reason my hearing sucks so much now is that to be able to tune out the noise around me in a DC my headphones had to be so loud people around me could could sometimes tell what I was listening to. I had a group lead once ask if I was listening to the White Stripes Seven Nation Army because even though I had my headphones in and he was sitting about 10 feet behind me he could hear it enough to tell what it was. Of course, he was one of the people I was trying to tune out.

P.P.S. While Larry's writeup refers to coworkers and mine to bosses just keep in mind sometimes his coworkers were my bosses.

Larry’s Perspective:

I'm guessing this song is on this list for the exact same reason for Shannon as it is for me - "F" dumbass coworker(s)! and by default, "F" the man! for not doing anything about it.

Why is it that some people at your jobs are such assholes? I mean, you spend more time at your job than you do at home. What makes them actively seek drama or create drama or are in a position that is way above their capabilities?

I've dealt with a lot of people in my career, and as a leader I dealt with these types of issues head on. It does them no good, the team no good and you no good to ignore it. You have to address it.

Yes I know, this song is probably the exact opposite of Wish Them Well but as I alluded, we're all human and it takes a lot of time and practice to reach that level of... let's call it generosity. I'm being generous by not going completely ape-shit on your dumbass.

I know for a fact that Shannon is using my line and she hasn't even typed one word yet - so see her quote...

...and I was right:

If you can't stand the way this place is - take yourself to higher places

So here's to you, "F" the man! and "F" dumbass coworkers!

Break
Three Days Grace

Tonight, my head is spinning
I need something to pick me up
I've tried, but nothing is working
I won't stop, I won't say I've had enough

Tonight, I start the fire
Tonight, I break away

Break away from everybody
Break away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take yourself to higher places

At night I feel like a vampire
It's not right, but I just can't give it up
I'll try to get myself higher
Let's go, we're gonna light it up

Tonight, we start the fire
Tonight, we break away

Break away from everybody
Break away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take yourself to higher places

If you can't stand the way this place is
Take yourself to higher places

Break away from everybody
Break away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take yourself to higher places

Higher places
To higher places
Higher places
Take yourself to higher places
