“Just between us I think it's time for us to realize The spaces in between Leave room For you and I to grow”
I have wanted a tattoo since I was a teenager but something always held me back. At first it was because I was scared of the possible pain then it was because I couldn't decide what or where to get one. For the very first one I had to make sure it would be something I would be ok with in case it was also the last. I would think about it off and on over the years but never landed on anything. Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t get one when I was younger, I think I may have regretted some of the things I had thought about. But around the time I was turning 40 I started thinking about it again and this time I was much more serious about it. I finally decided on the “where” now I just needed the “what”.
In 2010 Larry and I went to see the documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage and in it Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins talks about hearing the song Entre Nous for the first time and what he said moved me so much I started listening to the song obsessively. It was during this obsession that I decided to use the song for my tattoo. At first, I wasn’t’ sure if I wanted to use a lyric but, in the end, I decided the title of the song was the “what”.
The following are the full lyrics to the song. I would just ask that you read them and reflect on the power and the truth these lyrics have to offer.
Entre Nous Music by Lee and Lifeson / Lyrics by Peart
We are secrets to each other Each ones life a novel no one else has read Even joined in bonds of love We're linked to one another by such slender threads
We are planets to each other Drifting in our orbits to a brief eclipse Each of us a world apart Alone and yet together like two passing ships
Just between us I think its time for us to recognize The differences we sometimes fear to show Just between us I think it's time for us to realize The spaces in between Leave room For you and I to grow
We are strangers to each other Full of sliding panels An illusion show Acting well rehearsed routines Or playing from the heart? It's hard for one to know
Just between us I think it's time for us to recognize The differences we sometimes fear to show Just between us I think it's time for us to realize The spaces in between Leave room For you and I to grow
We are islands to each other Building hopeful bridges on a troubled sea Some are burned or swept away Some we would not choose But we're not always free
Just between us I think it's time for us to recognize The differences we sometimes fear to show Just between us I think it's time for us to realize The spaces in between Leave room for you and to grow...
Larry’s Perspective:
Another Rush song, another Rush concert from 1996 - even though at this point we had a two year old and a one year old, I somehow scrapped together $65 for two tickets - plus gas money to drive from Columbus to Dayton.
But this was not the most important "Today in Rush history" event. That honor is bestowed upon my wife, who by her own will decided that she should get the words Entre Nous tattooed on her neck. Not even this guy has anything so permanent to proclaim his love of Rush.
Honestly, she isn't really proclaiming her love of Rush as much as she's proclaiming her love of this song and its message.
If you happen to watch the Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage documentary, you will see a pretty open Billy Corgan talk about this song and what it meant to him in his childhood. Rush lyrics can have that affect...
