Shannon’s Perspective:
“Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be”
Nothing like being the Victim and running into the Villain to make you truly feel those lyrics.
It's about time Nine Inch Nails made another appearance. This song is off of the 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine and quite honestly, in a melodramatic way, saved me in 1989. The awesomeness of 80's music had been over for a couple of years and there was absolute shit playing on the radio all the time. Enough that I couldn't stand listening to music at all for a while.
And then Trent Reznor released this album. The clouds darkened and emo industrial music went mainstream and I was saved.
I don't have any tattoos but I've always said that if I ever got one it would be NIN across the back of my neck. Think about that for a moment - not Rush; not Peter Gabriel; not Neil - it would be NIN.
I have followed his career since 1989 and I've never been disappointed. Who would have known he'd go from this genre to working on film scores?
Another fun fact: I introduced Shannon to NIN! I'm sure in the beginning in '92 she wasn't all that thrilled but as he released more albums she let her angry emo side out a little bit more and began to truly understand the power of the dark side.
Moving on to the song - you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand why this song is on the Villain or Victim list.
