Asking for a Friend (Chvrches)

Shannon’s Perspective:

This song is new to me, so I currently do not have anything specific to the song to say. But as for our theme I will say that it is a truly strange thing when you realize that sometimes you ended up being the villain in someone else’s story.

Larry’s Pick: Asking for a Friend

Well the time has come to say goodbye to our summer break. It was definitely welcomed and I know it provided us a much needed recharge as well as did our little baby souls good to revisit the music of our children's past.

So that means we are back to the original routine - selecting songs by theme. Some, like tonight's, will be songs one of us does not know. In this case, it is my selection so Shannon doesn't know it.

So what's the next theme for song selections? Villain or Victim.

I can't quite remember how or when I heard the context of this phrase, but Shannon and I have discussed it off and on throughout our time together. And that context is this:

Everyone is a Villain in someone else's story.

I'd like to think I'm the hero in Shannon's story, but I'm admittedly the villain in someone else's stories for sure.

As we were discussing this theme originally, it was just the "Villain" side of things. But through that dialogue, we also began to recognize that we ourselves had been victims in past relationships. Some were of our own doing (ignoring signs, isolating from true friends, overall just being immature) and sometimes we were just blind-sided (being cheated on).

Thus the Villain or Victim theme.

Now on to the song. I discovered Chvrches through the game Death Stranding who wrote a song by the same name for the credits. Upon hearing that song I immediately knew I would love the band. I would personally call them a "modern interpretation of 1980's music". Everything just clicked for me.

So I ran out to my local Apple product and downloaded everything I could. I was not disappointed.

I fell in love with Lauren Mayberry's voice. As I dove a little deeper into understanding the band, it seemed like she was the type of female I would want my daughter to be. Someone who fought through and rose above the odds. Someone who isn't quite sure they can do it but keeps going. And succeeds. Essentially an all around bad-ass.

It seemed like she was struggling with fame - and not because she was famous - but because of all the trolls on the internet. Death threats. Constant masculine abuse. General nonsense that if Shannon and I found out our sons were doing there would be hell to pay.

The coolest part was I found out about them just before they released their album Screen Violence in 2021. Imagine my surprise and delight when I listened to "How Not to Drown" for the first time and heard ROBERT SMITH's VOICE on the track. So here we have a new favorite (Chvrches) with an old favorite (The Cure).

Relative to this song, I think the lyrics speak for themselves for this theme.

Asking for a Friend
CHVRCHES

I don't want to say
That I'm afraid to die
I'm no good at goodbyes
I can't apologize

And if I don't stop now
Will it follow me down?
I guess I have to try
It's the art of getting by

'Cause I sunk some ships with selfish lips
And it all came back to me
I was terrified
I never told them why

And the songs I wrote 'bout hearts I broke
Would never come for free
I cheated and I lied
But I meant it when I cried

So what do you say
When you lose your way?
The past is in the past
It isn't meant to last

But if I can't let go
Will you carry me home?
Can we celebrate the end?
I'm asking for a friend

'Cause I filled my bed with my regrets
But it hasn't killed me yet
None of it mattered
None of it mattered

And the mess we made on Fridays
Gave me Sundays on my knees
But you still matter
You still matter

You still matter (you still matter)
You still matter (you still matter)
You still matter (you still matter)
You still matter (you still matter)

You still matter (you still matter)
You still matter (you still matter)
You still matter (you still matter)
You still matter (you still matter)

I don't want to say
That I'm afraid to die
The past is in the past
It isn't meant to last

But if I can't let go
Will you carry me home?
Can we celebrate the end?
I'm asking for a friend

Home
Can we go?
Can we go?
Can we go?

Home
Can we go?
Can we go?
Can we go?

Home
Can we go?
Can we go?
Can we go?

Home
Can we go?
Can we go?
Can we go?
