Shannon’s Picks: Don’t Bring Me Down; All the Gold In California

Today would have been Shane’s 51st Birthday. Both of today’s songs are in remembrance of him.

Shane and I grew up in a house filled with music so it was no surprise that we both loved music as well. When I hear these particular songs, I think about a time when we lived in McCook, NE. Shane and I had one of those little portable suitcase record players. Not the Fisher-Price toy one, which we also had when we were younger but one that played real records.

Shane was curious enough that he was trying to understand how the record player actually worked but he was young enough that his imagination got the best of him. Shane decided in his wisdom at the ripe old age of 5 or 6 that the way our record player worked was a little tiny band lived inside of the case and played the music for you. When I asked how they would know what to play his answer was simple. “ You always talk out loud about what music you are getting ready to play so they must over hear that and that’s how they know what to play.” I mean how can you argue with that kind of logic?

I miss him everyday but these are the memories that keep him close to me.

P.S. The picture with his writing is from a card when I was in the hospital my senior year. When I came across it recently and read it all I could think was it has been kinda boring around here without him...

Larry’s Perspective:

I love this story about Shane. I'm sure we would have loved to chat endlessly about music...and probably how I was treating his sister...
