It’s Gotta Be You (Backstreet Boys)

Shannon’s Pick: It’s Gotta Be You

Disclaimer: There are several songs that remind me of the time in our lives when Gabriel and Connor were not on the same school schedule and that allowed Connor to have some time alone with myself and Larry. So, because of that and to save myself time and effort I will write the pertinent background information and just reuse it at the beginning of each of these songs, then I will include any special memory specific to the song listed. Now on to the background information…

When we moved to Lancaster, Ohio the boys went to school for several years at Fairfield Christian Church (Preschool) and then Fairfield Christian Academy (Kindergarten and up). Depending on your age you might attend preschool for 1,2,3 or 5 days. These were half days in the morning or afternoon; Kindergarten was all day 5 days a week. Since Connor was a year behind Gabriel in school it allowed for them to be on mostly different schedules until Connor started Kindergarten. This was nice because as the second born and only being 13 months younger than Gabriel he never got any real alone time with mom and dad and this was mostly one on one alone time with mom and dad because Larry and I were still working separate shifts. I greatly appreciated this time and I’m sure Larry did as well and, in the moment, so did Connor but I don’t know if he would really remember that now since he was so young then (between the ages of 3 and 6).

Sometimes if the weather was nice Larry would meet me at a park in Pickerington that was about halfway between home and work or sometimes it was while running errands in Lancaster or even just waiting to pick Gabriel up from school, but these were all opportunities for us to have music playing and for a little while these were the songs of choice, Connor’s choice.

“Baby, it’s the way…”

So, we talked about “The Police” songs from Connor’s Roxanne/Message in a bottle phase. He also went through a Backstreet Boys phase as well, at least with the Millennium album. So yes, I know a lot of Backstreet Boys songs, songs that maybe under other circumstances I would not admit to knowing but when your kid wants to listen to something well that’s what you usually end up listening to. And now all these years later having listened to these songs so many times when they do come on, I can think back vividly to those times with him in the car.

Larry’s Perspective:

I did not approve / endorse this message. Look, as much as Shannon is a tom-boy, she is still a female. The world was literally taken over by boy bands due to some pretty smart (and now filthy rich) industry execs. So yes, she listened to this as did I because it was pretty much unavoidable.

But no - I didn't like it. Given the right age and training, I could have been one of those marionettes.
