First - hat tip to whoever wrote My Best Friend Plank. It truly is a masterpiece and should be in the songwriters Hall of Fame. It's one of those kids songs that has endured in our household because of the lyrics.
This cartoon is also from the care-free era of their life, but for whatever reason it became one their favorites, especially Gabriel. From what I recall, it's just three goofy friends, and honestly typing this right now, I wonder if it's modeled after The Three Stooges. Because there is an idiot in charge who thinks he is the smartest (and is the loudest), one who is quiet and is actually the smartest and one who is just a lovable oaf. We all know my personal connection and Shannon's one thing to save if the house catches on fire Three Stooges reference.
As we were discussing these songs, Shannon shared the following perspective. She was home a lot more than I was, and would often just spend time with them watching their shows. In doing that, she actually enjoyed a lot of them - their humor, their goofiness, their wit and sarcasm. But reflecting on it now, it's more about the fact that she and our sons enjoyed the same things - got the same jokes - developed the same sarcasm, etc.
Essentially, if she was a kid the same time our kids were kids, they would definitely be friends. Which she thinks is pretty cool.
But the reality was we were parents and had to play the roles of "mom and dad".
The reality is we think this truly laid the groundwork to be friends as adults now.
P.S. For the blurry pictures, we had a family membership to COSI and one of their exhibits was around Animation - and wouldn't you know it Ed, Edd n Eddy as well as Johnnie & Plank were part of it. We might have been "mom and dad", but we were "cool mom and dad..."
