Slipping (Geddy Lee)

Shannon’s Pick: Slipping

“Tried to be there
Be there when you fall
Tried to make you feel big
When life makes you feel small
But I could not find the steps
Quickly enough to take”

Say what you will about Geddy Lee’s voice, and many people do, but I love the sound of it and this song always reminds me of just how much I love it. I also find this song to be beautiful musically, but it’s those lyrics that just cut straight to the heart. We have all been there, wanting to do the best for the people we care about in our lives but somehow just falling short. This song is a good reminder that try as we might sometimes, we will slip along the way.

Larry’s Perspective:

It's always concerning when a band member sets off and does their own thing because you're always like "Is the band done? Why is Geddy doing this?"

Of course, this album came out in November 2000, so no need to panic. The band didn't breakup. And even Alex managed to put out some solo work. To Geddy, he's a genius. To Neil, he's a genius. But to a genius, he's no genius...

It was really weird hearing Geddy singing in a band totally different than Rush. But as time went on and this album got more playtime, it grew on me. And since Neil basically wrote all the lyrics for Rush, it was also interesting to see how Geddy crafted songs. If you want to check out any other songs off My Favorite Headache, I would recommend Still and Grace to Grace.

There aren't a lot of lyrics to this song, but it does a great job portraying the humbleness of someone trying to do their best and acknowledging even the helpers need help or forgiveness. I touched on this somewhat with Bent and Here Comes the Flood.

So just know it's ok to slip along the way...

P.S. Remember the name Ben Mink (who played on this album); his name will be very important tomorrow...
