When Your Heart Stops Beating (+44)

Shannon’s Perspective:

“In the dark when there's no one listening
In the times when we both get carried away”

Larry and I like to hope we will be that really old couple that has been married for a lifetime and they both pass within hours of each other. That is the reality I choose to live in and will until it becomes obvious that I can’t.

Larry’s Pick: When Your Heart Stops Beating

Let me take you back to Larry's parents house way back in December, 1993 to a moment where their blasphemous son told his Billy Graham employed mom and equally devout dad that his girlfriend was pregnant and they were going to get married.

That went well.

Let's just say it was a very unpopular decision to my parents and my sisters. But more on this story later. The point to that story relative to this song are these lines:

All you people at the top don't know nothin' about it
We don't give a fuck what the price is
So just leave us to our own devices and we'll leave you alone

And leave them alone, I have. Because at the end of the day it was better for my mental health. Honestly, the feeling must be mutual because for whatever reasons they have, they don't reach out either. I respect that - how could I not?

But there is another way this song ties into Shannon and I and it does involve my parents.

My dad passed away suddenly in February, 2010. The circumstances were such that he was alone and it happened on the side of a road. There are a million thoughts and questions around this situation that will never be answered. But that one word in this story carries a lot of weight - alone.

I'm truly sorry that my mom, sisters and I were not able to say goodbye. As described in my Landing In London entry, it took this personal experience to understand this happens to people everywhere, everyday.

So this song helps me remember that the possibility exists that this situation could be mine and Shannon's - which is pretty fucking terrible to think about. So I can only hope

I'll be there when your heart stops beating
I'll be there when your last breath's taken away
In the dark, when there's no one listening
In the times when we both get carried away
When we both get carried away
