Highwayman (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson)

Shannon’s Perspective:

“Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain”

I have always been drawn to this song and the story it tells but even more so now as I contemplate what comes after this life. All I have decided for sure so far is that somehow I will remain.

Larry’s Pick: Highwayman

I'll admit that there is a small part of me that hopes in all the songs we discuss this year, that someone, sometime hears one of these songs for the first time and walks away thinking - I won't forget that song and it's now going to be part of my playlists. And I hope this is one of those songs.

I'll never forget the first time I played "A Boy Named Sue" for Connor. It was just one of those moments where I didn't tell him to really listen to it - he just did when it came on. He really got into the story and laughed and laughed at the end. I said if you liked that one, listen to this one (meaning Highwayman).

It didn't have quite the same impact but he enjoyed this story telling as well. He may not remember this moment in time - but I do. Anytime I can recall a music moment with either of our sons, well, that's pretty special for me.

You can't listen to this song without creating some pretty awesome imagery for each section. And you can probably guess by now my favorite part:

I fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again

Again - just a great story told with very few lyrics and by very talented individuals.

P.S. I think it's worth mentioning that Johnny Cash made "A Boy Named Sue" famous - but he did not write it. It was written by Shel Silverstein. Yes - that Shel Silverstein - who wrote The Giving Tree; Where the Sidewalk Ends; A Light in the Attic as well as so much more.
