“I’ll be watching you.”
All the way back in 1983 when this song came out, I felt like there was more to it than what it seemed to be on the surface, and all these years later I stand by that interpretation. I know a lot of people have used this song over the years in their weddings as a first dance song, but I still think this song is more sinister than sweet. It definitely gives me stalker vibes.
The song itself is not special to Larry and I, but we do agree that it is definitely not a love song.
Larry’s Perspective:
Oh to be alive in 1983 when The Police released Synchronicity - which I was! 13 years old! And I'm positive by that time I was somehow involved with the Columbia Record Club (getting cassettes).
There will be at least one other song from this album on the list - and I guarantee it is not one you would expect.
Little did we know that this would be the last album The Police would release. They literally imploded which is such a tragedy.
Of course this song made the Junior High / High School dance circuit - but oh, if the adults only knew what we know.
This is not - repeat - is not - a love song. This is a stalker song. And I'm not choosing stalker sides. It could be a dude stalking. It could be a chick stalking. And don't lie - we've all been there being stalked and being the stalker. Hell Shannon stalks my Facebook every day!
I love being able to look back on this song and 1980's dances and most importantly that I married someone who literally graduated the same year I did, just 1000+ miles away. I love that our generation moved music forward and it is still loved and enjoyed by my sons and their generation, and probably the next one as well.
Because it is mostly all fantastic. 1983 was the best year of music releases. And Sting is definitely a smart dude and great song writer.
Just know, if you ever put this on a mix-tape and gave it to someone - you are a psycho...
