Shannon’s Perspective:
“There’s nobody here. It’s just you and me. It’s where I wanna be.”
To be clear, when Larry first approached me with this project idea, he had had it in mind for a while but was still trying to figure out exactly what he wanted it to be and how it would look when completed. So, when he first began mentioning it to me, I thought we just needed to find songs to slow dance to and did not need to really have any deep meaning or a deep connection to. Boy, was I wrong, and I really have no one to blame but myself because after 30 years, well let’s just say I should have known better.
As the project continued to grow and morph it started to become a lot clearer what it could be, it also became clear that this would be a large endeavor, totally worth it but still quite a task. With that in mind I went back and forth on this and several other songs but ultimately decided to leave a few of them on here. The majority of the songs we will dance to already have a memory tied to them and the dance will now just be another layer of that memory but I wanted us to also make some totally new memories.
Any who, I have always really loved this song and thought, well this would be a good song to dance to. You know what it was and now whenever I do listen to this song I have a beautiful memory of it.
P.S. While I was typing this Larry was on Wikipedia looking up song facts.
First, this song came out in 1986, so Larry and I would have been 15 and 14, respectively.
Second, I don’t care how much hate there was for it on Wikipedia I stand by my choice.
Larry’s Perspective:
So how is this project going almost one week in? Quite honestly, it's overwhelming - in a good way.
First is how you are reading this. I have no idea how to use WordPress so I am learning on the fly - and I haven't even added any media yet (which is the plan).
We've finally exceeded 365 songs in the list, but that's a problem as well. Now we have to trim the fat. We spent a lot of time today trying to place songs into a themed category. And that's on top of charting what concerts we went to when, what other music themed things we did, what special dates occur during the year that we can tie music memories to, getting things ready to scan and the list goes on and on. This soundtrack to our life together has taken on a life of its own rather quickly.
Shannon could tell I was getting overwhelmed with this on top of day to day life, so she offered and I accepted her owning this weeks songs. That gives me some breathing room to further refine the list and get things moving along.
So this was one of the songs she chose. Other than hearing it when I was in high school and throughout the years, it never really made an impression. But I'm glad to have made a memory with Shannon tonight.
P.S. It's worth your time to read the Wikipedia entry.
P.P.S. If I knew how to put a link on my WordPress page, I 'd provide the Wikipedia link.
